What have students learnt that make them ready to learn this now?
Students will revisit the knowledge and skills they learned in primary school. Baseline activities will assess the ability to draw and use a range of materials to make marks and meaningful representations about themselves and what they enjoy.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will learn about tools, techniques, and materials when making drawings. They will learn to use drawing materials purposefully to achieve particular characteristics or qualities. This will prepare them to learn about skills and knowledge when painting next term.
Spring
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students know about the tools, techniques, and materials they can use to draw. They have skills to use drawing materials with purpose. Students will now use different paint to explore the effects it can make, colour mixing and how paint can be used to represent ideas and emotions.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will look at a range of artists alongside their experiments with paint. They will explore techniques used by Mark Rothko, Georges Seurat, Jackson Pollock and Bridget Riley to create images linking to the theme My Home. Students have knowledge of colours and how to mix secondary colours. They are now ready to look at colour and shape in nature and to further use their drawing and painting skills outside the classroom.
Summer
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students have looked at a range of artists alongside their experiments with paint to create images linking to last term’s theme: My Home. Students will look at colour and pattern in nature using photography, collage and printmaking from inspiration outside of the classroom.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will learn that artists draw inspiration from the natural world and that some artists use nature to create artwork for example Andy Goldsworthy. Students will use their locality to collect natural forms: leaves, twigs, flowers, pebbles, bark, feathers to create 2 and 3 dimensional pieces.
Students will develop their confidence in talking about their work and show preferences for different items and techniques they have used. This work will prepare students for next term’s theme of ‘What Can I Do?’ during which they will use a variety of sculptural materials, starting with clay.
Year 8

What have students learned before that makes them ready to learn this now?
Students know that artists draw and that some artists use nature to create artwork. Students are developing their ability to talk about their work and show preferences for different items and techniques they use. This term they will use a variety of sculptural materials to further explore natural forms in two- and three-dimensions using clay.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will look at the work of contemporary ceramicist Kate Malone to produce a ceramic container inspired by the shapes and texture of fruit and vegetables. This work will complement SMSC work about the Harvest Festival and Christmas.
Spring
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students focussed on the work of contemporary ceramicist Kate Malone to produce a vessel inspired by the shapes and texture of fruit and vegetables. Students had opportunities to share this work with others at the Harvest Festival and Christmas market when the vessels were used to display different foods. Students are now ready to look at other sculptures and learn how to build structures using a range of materials and techniques.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students use a variety of materials; cards, paper, fabric, tape as well as junk which they have collected. Students shared their ideas, experiences and imagination to collaboratively create a junk figure construction in the style of artist Michelle Reader. The skills learnt this term will prepare students for mask making, during which they will use new media and revisit construction techniques and patterns.

What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students explored a variety of materials including recycled materials to collaboratively construct a junk figure in the style of artist Michelle Reader. The work has prepared students for this term’s mask making project. Students will use new media and make choices about likes and dislikes whilst revisiting the construction techniques and knowledge of colour and mark making to make their mask.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will look at how masks have been used around the world for centuries. They will respond to different types of masks and choose one to inspire a design of their own. Students will be introduced to papier mache and learn about decoration. This work will prepare them for the next project about pattern.
Year 9

- Know how to choose and use materials because they have the qualities to give the effects that will suit their piece of work or what they want to do.

Autumn
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students explored how masks have been used around the world for centuries. They made a preference and chose one design which appealed to them as inspiration for a design of their own. Students learned about decoration and are now ready to create patterns through a range of printmaking techniques.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will become familiar with Orla Kiely. They will learn how to do mono printing, block printing and foam board printing. This work will focus on pattern, line and shape and will see students working on fabric to create a textile design. This work will prepare students to use their printmaking skills in a 3D project inspired by Native American culture.
Spring
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students are familiar with the work of designer and printmaker Orla Kiely. They have experienced mono printing, block printing and foam board printing. Their knowledge of pattern, line and shape alongside the construction skills developed in year 8 will see students working on collaborative designs to build a class Totem Pole inspired by Native American Indians.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Native American culture. They will learn how these tell a story about a person's family, achievements and beliefs. Students will use prior art skills to create a class Totem Pole. It will be 3D, using people and animals as starting points for the design. Students will use a variety of materials and manipulate these to form features. Printed pattern, painted shapes will see further development of student's prior learning. This collaborative work will prepare students to use a variety of art knowledge and skills to create a self-portrait at the end of KS3.
Summer
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Last term students learned about the Native American culture and the Totem Poles which tell a story. Students worked collaboratively to design and build a class Totem Pole. Students used their prior knowledge of tools and techniques. Students will now use a variety of art knowledge and skills to create an end of KS3 self-portrait. They will look at the portraits of Frida Kahlo and Van Gogh, recognising their use of colour, mark making and their depiction of symbolic items. Students will use a range of materials to create a piece of art about themselves.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students have used a variety of materials, tools and techniques. They have worked in 2 and 3 dimensions - collaboratively and by themselves.
They are ready to start the Explore Arts Award Entry Level qualification in KS4. The Arts Award Explore programme will continue to encourage students to experience different art forms and artists, and develop their own creativity. Along the way they record what they've achieved and enjoyed and share it with others, building their artistic knowledge, creativity and confidence.
Year 10

- Know that art is available to see in the locality and they can have an opinion about what they see.
- Know that art can be used for a range of purposes. Know that a sketchbook can be used to collect information.
Autumn
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
In KS3 students developed skills using tools when drawing and painting. Students have explored line, shape and colour. They are now ready to use these skills in the style of an artist. Research skills will be developed whilst looking at the work of Andy Warhol. Students will gain an understanding of Pop art and further develop their recognition of repeat patterns in artworks. They will create images in the style of Andy Warhol and start to make simple connections between their own and others' art.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students will have increasing awareness of different tools and techniques. They will recognise the media in the work of Andy Warhol. They can make simple connections between their own work and that of others. They are ready to learn about Art in the locality and see pieces of art first hand.
Spring
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students have developed research skills. They know that there are connections between their own work and that of the artists they have looked at. They can recognise different media which they work with. They have experience of working in 2 and 3 dimensions. Students are ready to learn about what art there is available in the locality and use this as inspiration to create a piece of artwork. Students will look at the work of a variety of artists in a museum or gallery setting. They will collect information via different media: photo, film, booklets, interviews. Students will share their thoughts and opinions with others via suitable platforms.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students have shown they can make an informed opinion about the work of others. They can share their likes and dislikes about works of art and have first hand experience of being in an arts space. With this knowledge they are ready to start using a sketchbook to document their ideas and make choices about the media and techniques they enjoy.
Summer
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Last term students made informed opinions about the work of others through visits to art spaces. They are now ready to learn about art which is created for the purpose of advertisement. Students will explore the Change 4 Life campaign graphics by artist Keith Haring. They will use the human body to create designs to promote a sports event or health event in school.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students have created a design or artwork for a specific purpose. They have looked at art which is mass produced for advertising and promotion. Students know how to use paint, print and pattern with growing confidence. Students are now ready to look at how artists use other forms of art including digital media.
Year 11
- Know how to use digital media and know that scale can be changed to create an impact.
- Know that artists are inspired by the world around them. Know how to use materials to design a piece of art inspired by Bradford.
- Know how to use research skills and present these to share is important to them at this time.
Autumn
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students explored the mass produced artwork of Keith Haring’s NHS advertisement. They recognise how images can be reproduced digitally. Students will now explore the work of David Hockney and his use of digital media and scale in the piece ‘A Year in Normandy’. Students will visit Salts Mill Gallery to see this and then experiment with digital media and mark making to recreate A Year in Bradford.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students have the skills to use digital media as an art form. They also revisited mark making to create their large scale work with a focus on nature. They will now look at artwork which features Cityscapes. They will use their sketchbooks and digital photography skills to revisit the art form of sculpture.
Spring
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students have learned about scale and how to use digital media in prior learning. They will further explore scale looking at the buildings of Bradford and record these using photography and drawing in their sketchbook. Students will look at the work of Stephen Wiltshire. They have the knowledge to use a range of media and will make an informed choice about what they will use to make their cityscape.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
Students have used art tools and materials to create work about Bradford and know that artists are inspired by what is around them and their experiences. They are now ready to think further about British culture with reference to the artist Yinka Shonibare. Students will reflect on their own lives and give a visual response to this.
Summer
What have students learned before that make them ready to learn this now?
Students know how to use a sketchbook to collect information and inspiration. They have improved their mastery with a range of materials and techniques. Students will now use all these skills to create a personal piece of work about themselves inspired by their experience of British culture as well as their origin.
How will what they are learning now prepare them for what they need to learn next?
In KS4 students have built upon their knowledge of colour, shape, line, form and pattern and further developed their creative skills when painting, drawing, sculpting, printing and using digital media. They have achieved an Entry Level qualification in Art through the Arts Award-Explore. They are now ready to consider art from a vocational point of view. They will further develop observational skills and link their art work to other vocational areas, creating art for a wider purpose.
