  • RHS Pilot Project

    Published 10/07/26

From March to July, our KS5 students proudly took part in the first RHS Pilot Project, which focused on promoting wellbeing through horticulture while developing students' knowledge and practical gardening skills.

Research has shown that spending time with plants and engaging in horticulture can have a positive impact on mental health and wellbeing by reducing stress, improving mood and creating a calmer learning environment. With this in mind, students worked together to help bring more greenery into the Sixth Form.

The project began with students exploring the local community to identify a variety of plants, trees, bulbs and other species. They then developed valuable life skills by managing budgets and planning a visit to Tong Garden Centre, where they selected and purchased seeds and plants for every classroom in the Sixth Form building.

Throughout the project, students learnt how to grow and care for plants while creating welcoming classroom spaces that can support both learning and wellbeing. They also strengthened their teamwork, communication and decision-making skills through every stage of the project.

The project was a great success, and we are delighted that the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has invited us to take part again. We were pleased to accept the invitation and look forward to continuing this exciting partnership and further promoting wellbeing through horticulture across our school.
